The Chicago Auto Show 2007

The other day, I went to the Chicago Auto Show and it was a LOT of fun! Surprising that it would even come out of my mouth, since I know next to nothing about cars, right? My friends thought so too, but it turns out, an auto show is more than just cars. . .

First there was a GM 2007 Imagine kick off, which was very interesting because this is where fashion students from International Academy of Design Technology, get a sneak peek at the GM vehicles this year from which they will draw inspiration to design a garment from for the 2007 Imagine Fashion Show in May. I'm intrigued to find out how one goes about designing garment based on a car. Incidentally there were lots of cool cars. For this sexy red Chevy, they even have a photographer there to take a free picture of you inside it. I am checking mine out online, right now!

There were also many other hot cars to take pictures with. Porsche's, Mercedes, BMW's, Lexus (above) and huge trucks that makes me look TINY in comparison. It was quite cool.
Then there were just really cool carsto look at, like this Lambourghini (left)(did I spell this right?) and this fully functional car called the Bullet (right)that was supposedly in some movie. Doesn't it look like a space ship?

At the autushow, you can also do an advertisement for Toyota. You get to stand in front of a green screen and read off a prompter. Afterwards they burn it onto a DVD for you to take home. I highly recommend this. Then at the Army booth, you can rock climb, take pictures with tanks and get your own personalised dogtag! Other cool things we saw on tv but missed out (shame!) is a driving course, where you can drive a jeep up model mountains and rough terrains, moving car video games. . . . . . all the fun stuff.

So if you're in the area this week, definitely stop by the autushow!

New York FW07 Fashion Week Wrapup III

More fashion from New York!

Proenza Schouler
The designer duo made a fab collection, and it (thankfully) looked nothing like the recent collection they designed for Target. Most of the models wore hats, which completely covered the faces of most models, but it really makes you focus on the clothes.

I'm not going to go into their influences for this collection, but I feel the need to say how much I dislike the coats and jackets (like the one on the left above,) which are made of a few different materials. But I do like the combination of t-shirt and silk top with the wide-leg pants (in the photo on the right.) It's such a casual chic combo.

The thing that really caught my eye in this collections were the dresses. I love how it's sheer in some places, but there are ribbon-like fabric covering the chest and skirt area.

Vera Wang

At first glance, I really didn't like this collection. But on the third glance (such faith I have in Wang!), the collection really started to appeal to me. Even though the whole Russian theme seemed a bit FW04 to me, everything was so pretty and girly I couldn't resist.

Sigh, look at these slightly-babydoll-slightly-schoolgirl looks. They're soo adorable.

I just realised that two of the few Vera Wang outfits were modelled by Vlada (middle). She really suits this whole Russian babydoll look, doesn't she? Ooh, and I love that dress on her. It's so pretty how it's like an embelished t-shirt dress with extra details, like the see-through fabric around her arms.

I'm not usually a poka-dots fan, but the silver, polka-dot dress (right) looks fantastic. Wouldn't that be perfect for a cute dinner dress (maybe with a black cardigan over it)?

J. Mendel

I wasn't really interested in the whole J. Mendel collection, but a few of the dresses were really pretty in a simple, yet with some details way, (like the two above).

Zac Posen

Ahh, I'm not a big fan of Posen to be honest, esp those huge dresses of his. But I just realised that he designs amazing suits. I love the three looks below, all of which would be so perfect for a stylish working girl. Seriously, can you imagine going to work looking that fabulous?

Valentines For Him

So we all know what we would love for V Day, but the bigger question is, what would HE like?? After much discussion with my friends, it seems like the key is practicality. So here are a few ideas:

The classic gift: Cologne. They all need to smell good right? The Armani Black Code for men comes highly recommended.

If he's not already on a skincare regime, show him you care and introduce him to one. He'll thank you when his skin is perfect.

Another classic, a watch. This one is from Tiffany's, nice huh? I didn't know they made such nice watches for men too.

Another safe buy, a Lacoste Polo. Smart and clean cut.

Something a little more personal, silk boxers with red hearts.

Something he'll REALLY LOVE, the Wii or Play Station 3 if you can't get your hands on Wii. Lol, I'd love a Wii too!
Personal but still practical, a personalised calendar from shutterfly. You can even mark down special dates!

Sweet and cute- customised M&M's or customized anything. You can even make your own customized cupcakes/cookies. Besides, they don't say that the way to a guy's heart is through their stomach for nothing ;)

And that is about all I can come up with so far. Anymore thoughts to share?

New York FW07 Fashion Week Wrapup II

After blogging about yesterday's more mature collections, I felt the need to look at the young(er) designers. There are now more and more young New York designers (I think thanks to Anna Wintour,) and while they are not very infleuntial in terms of trends, they're becoming more and more part of the fashion scene. Plus their clothes are usually cuter than the clothes by the more established designers.

3.1 Philip Lim
Personally I've never worn anything by this designer before, but I've heard nothing but good things about it. Almost everyone who is interested in fashion seem to like his clothes. The great thing about his clothes is that they're chic, expensive-looking but still totally wearable in normal life.

Like the Marc Jacobs collection, hats were the acceossry to wear. But instead of French hats, Philip Lim opted by Bowler hats instead, which I find much cooler and hip, adding an edge to the outfits.

I can totally see a socialite wearing the dress in the middle to some New York party.

This collection was very girly in a cool, non-flowery way. I love the bright blue dress with white leather jacket outfit in the middle. That white dress on the right is so loveable too.

Marchesa
I liked this FW07 collection more than their SS07 collection. The dresses just seem less forceful this time and was a more well-rounded collection. There was a good mix of cocktail dresses and floor-length dresses. And for most part, the designers stuck to neautral colours.

I love the design of this purple velvet dress. It's simple but adorned at the same time.

I really like the dress on the right. Maybe because I like black and white combination, with silk and netting material. Although I really don't know when anyone, except possibly celebs on the red carpet, would wear it.

Erin Featherson

I've never noticed her before, and to be honest, this collection wasn't particularly amazing or anytihng, but the whole concept is so cute. All the models looked like little fairies; so out of this world.

If you look at just the clothes, there are some really pretty, adorable dresses. I think the gold dress (middle) is really pretty. This collection is just fun to look at.

New York FW07 Fashion Week Wrapup I

Fun! It's fashion weeks again.

Marc Jacobs

I really don't know what to think about this Marc Jacobs collection. It's so... different and grown up. I mean, I know Marc Jacobs' main line is meant to be for grown-ups and all, but this is really different. The main difference is probably the silhouette -it's much narrower than the previous one, (probably because Marc slimmed down himself.)

The obvious standout accessory of the show -the hat.

I haven't studied fashion history before, so I can't be certain, but this collection reminds me of YSL decades back. And some pieces reminded me of Prada's SS07 collection.

This collection doesn't seem quite as girly as the past collections, except maybe for the sophisticated-looking ribbons at the end.

Diane von Furstenburg

I've never quite appreciated DvF until last year. This collection of DvF seemed again, a bit different from her previous work. There were almost no wrap-dresses, but there were a lot more of other types of dresses. Like her last few collections, there were a lot of bold colours.

There was a continuation of this season's black and grey trend.

Lisa Cant (middle) in the silver dress... wow.

Lots and lots of pretty, yet modern cocktail dresses.

DKNY
While DKNY isn't exactly a large or influential show, I do like that it's more relateable than other big brands because it's for the young crowd. The fashion wasn't ground-breaking or anything, but there were a lot of wearable pieces.

This collection is all about doing the grown-up looks in a hip, cool way.

I really like the silk dress in the middle. And that coat on the left is so girly -I want!

So to kick off fashion week, I'd like to wish my darling Harrods Girl a HAPPY 21st BIRTHDAY! You're officially legal everywhere now!
